Deepx's AI Chip Targets Cameras

Yet another South Korean AI chip startup, Deepx, has emerged from stealth mode. The company’s products target computer-vision applications and provide performance from 2 to 184 TOPS.

Deepx is the latest South Korean chip startup emerging from stealth mode to announce AI accelerators. The first product, now sampling, is a 28 nm SoC for low-end security cameras. It’s scheduled to ship in 1H24, along with a 5 nm accelerator on an M.2 module. Two additional accelerators fabricated in 14 nm and 5 nm processes are scheduled to debut in 1H25 or later. The company says performance will range from 2.4 to 184 TOPS across the product line.

Founded in 2019, Deepx has raised $25 million in capital from 11 investors, including Korea Development Bank and alumni partners . Samsung indirectly supports the company by providing access to its 5 nm technology. The company has filed more than 150 patent applications worldwide.

Deepx focuses on computer vision. Its lower-end chips target smart cameras and network-connected video recorders, whereas higher-end products target the automotive and robotics markets. The chip runs a range of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) including the latest Yolo V7, published in 2022. The company has published no MLPerf benchmarks, however.
