Delivering Required Die Emissions to Downstream Customers, Preserving Trade Secrets
As the semiconductor industry accelerates toward carbon transparency, a major foundry faced escalating demands from downstream customers for die-level emissions data. Traditional reporting tools lacked the granularity needed for accurate product carbon footprints, putting both customer trust and IP security at risk. To solve this, the foundry turned to TechInsights’ EcoInsights platform, enabling scalable, secure emissions reporting while preserving proprietary manufacturing details—turning a reporting burden into a strategic advantage.
The Challenge
A leading semiconductor foundry was facing mounting pressure from hundreds of downstream customers—including fabless companies, IDMs, and product manufacturers—who were demanding increasingly detailed carbon emissions data. These customers specifically requested Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions data at the die level, reflecting a broader industry shift toward greater supply chain transparency and compliance with sustainability reporting standards.
The problem was compounded by the limitations of traditional CDP disclosure data, which lacked the granularity necessary to support product-level Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) or Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) analysis. Complicating matters further, die manufacturing represented the largest share of carbon emissions for many of the foundry’s customers, making this part of the footprint critical to account for accurately.
Adding to the complexity, requests for this data were becoming more frequent, stretching internal resources and creating potential bottlenecks. At the same time, the foundry was reluctant to share proprietary manufacturing recipes and process flows, which are essential to emissions calculations but also a closely guarded competitive advantage.
Without a secure and efficient way to deliver the required data, the foundry risked losing customer trust and future business opportunities.
The Solution
To meet the growing demand for transparent, granular emissions data—while safeguarding its intellectual property—the foundry adopted EcoInsights, a sustainability analytics tool developed by TechInsights and tailored specifically for semiconductor manufacturing emissions management.
EcoInsights enabled the foundry to access and customize over 1,500 process flows across more than 350 fabs worldwide, providing an unprecedented level of operational flexibility. With the platform, the foundry could adjust die size and die yield parameters to generate Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions calculations at both the wafer and die level—without having to reveal sensitive process information.
Most importantly, EcoInsights allowed the foundry to quickly produce fab-level emissions values that were both accurate and actionable. This empowered their sustainability and customer engagement teams to meet data requests with speed and confidence, while maintaining the confidentiality of proprietary manufacturing knowledge.
The Results
By deploying EcoInsights, the foundry successfully transformed a growing challenge into a competitive advantage. It gained the ability to respond rapidly to a high volume of downstream customer emissions requests, ensuring it remained a trusted partner in an increasingly carbon-conscious semiconductor supply chain.
The foundry also achieved a key strategic goal: preserving the confidentiality of its advanced process flows and manufacturing recipes. This enabled the company to maintain its competitive edge while still delivering the transparency customers required.
Ultimately, EcoInsights helped the foundry align emissions reporting with business efficiency, enabling it to serve sustainability goals without compromising on IP protection or operational performance.
