2 Min Read June 6, 2025
2024 automotive semiconductor wafer capacity saw flat growth; foundries expanded while IDM capacity declined. Capex trends varied across key industry players.
This written report accompanies the Automotive Vendor Landscape Online Data Report updated with 2024 actual data. A sampling of integrated device manufacturers (IDMs) and foundries important to the automotive industry shows wafer capacity year-over-year remained flat on average in 2024, with IDM capacity falling 3% while Foundries grew capacity by 7%. All four foundries tracked increased wafer capacity with SMIC growing capacity by 13%, GlobalFoundries by 9%, UMC by 7%, and TSMC (the largest foundry) by 5%. Several IDMs have increased fab capacities in 2024 including Vishay (acquired Nexperia's Newport wafer fab in UK), Bosch, Renesas, Analog Devices, Texas Instruments, STMicroelectronics, Intel, Rohm, onsemi, and Infineon. Capital expenditures for IDMs and foundries in 2024 dropped by 6%, continuing the trend downwards from 2023. Capex fell by over 30% at GlobalFoundries, Microchip, onsemi, Kioxia, Analog Devices, and STMicroelectronics. Capex grew by over 30% at Bosch, Micron, and Renesas.
