Intel FIVR gets a new inductor

Intel has continued reducing the size of their integrated voltage regulators in yet another scaling evolution step introduced in their Sapphire Rapids product. This new inductor structure is one of five different in-package inductors Intel has thus-far implemented for FIVR. In this report, we dig into the details of this evolution and why they made changes they did. We review how FIVR has evolved since its introduction in the Intel Core 22 nm Haswell processors, through to their newest Coax MIL structure in 2023 which more than doubles the current density handling of the previous generation FIVR structures.
