Wireless Operator Performance Benchmarking Q1 2023

Mobile operator EBITDA margins continued their slow but steady decline in Q1 2023 as inflationary pressure on OPEX, across energy and the workforce in particular, were not quite matched by the 4% growth in revenue achieved in part through price increases. Globally, Q1 2023 EBITDA stood at 44.7% of service revenue, a ratio below that seen in Q1 in the previous four years. Churn was down marginally, a trend that usually supports OPEX savings, though operators should be encouraged that they continue to manage OPEX while data traffic climbs. Wireless data traffic increased 17% in Q1 2023 with average use per subscription up 15% to 10.6GB/month. This data table tracks the operational and financial performance of 263 active wireless operators, which collectively account for 85% of the world's cellular subscriptions.
