Cellular user equipment (UE) consisting of smartphones, feature phones, cellular routers, M2M and other non-handset devices, accounts for the highest annual production volumes of radio chips in the semiconductor industry. Within celluar UE, baseband processors, RF transceivers, low noise amplifiers, and RF switches make up the top five functional elements in terms of die area. Based on teardowns and die sizes from reverse engineering conducted by TechInsights, RF in cellular UE represents production of approximately 18 billion wafers per year (200 mm equivalents). Based on cellular device demand trends, production of CMOS SOI and aluminum nitride (for BAW filters) wafers will grow the fastest.
