Deep Dive Teardown of the Asus Rog Ally 2023 RC71L Handheld Gaming Console

There are two variants of the Asus Rog Ally series. The primary distinction between the models is in the AMD processor. Asus offers one version of the Rog Ally featuring the standard Ryzen Z1 processor and another equipped with the Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor. This Teardown report analyzes the higher-end model with the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor. The Asus Rog Ally console includes a 2590 mAh capacity Li-Polymer battery with a 65 W adapter for charging. The Rog Ally has a 7-inch TFT touchscreen display with a 120 Hz refresh rate. The AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor is supported by 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and a storage capacity of 512 GB. It does not support any cellular connectivity.
Compared to the Razer Edge 5G mobile gaming device, the Rog Ally may have a larger display, but the Razer Edge has an AMOLED display with a higher resolution (2400 x 1080) and refresh rate (144 Hz). The Asus Rog Ally does have more LPDDR5 RAM (12 GB v. 8 GB) and offers a starting storage capacity of 512 GB versus the 128 GB for the Razer Edge 5G. For cooling, both the Asus Rog Ally and Razer Edge 5G have small fans in their designs. However, the Rog Ally incorporated two small fans and an additional heat pipe in its design. The Razer Edge has a single small fan and does not have a heat pipe, possibly due to the smaller size of the device. Finally, as mentioned above, the Rog Ally does not have cellular connectivity and instead, gamers will need to connect to a WiFi network, whereas the Razer Edge 5G is designed with the Qualcomm Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 mobile processor allowing gamers to truly go mobile for game play.
