Samsung decided to go early with 3nm, generating interest as TSMC's customers seek hedging and a second source. We anticipate Samsung’s 2nd-generation SF3 process (to be used in mainstream Samsung products and their fabless partner products) to increase choice in the highly dynamic ASIC accelerator market and capture market share from TSMC. In its third year since announcing the mass production of SF3E chips, Samsung Foundry has struggled to secure customers, especially in the high-value HPC market. Yet, Samsung's experience with SF3 and its unique position in the semiconductor industry invites a review of the company's opportunities and challenges.
