Matter Version 1.4.2 Update: Is BLE Becoming Redundant in Smart Home Chipsets?

This report provides TechInsights' initial perspectives on the release of Matter 1.4.2, the smart home standard coordinated by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA). The Matter standard was launched in October 2022 and is backed by smart home ecosystem players Amazon, Apple, Google, and Samsung, as well as the CSA, formerly known as the Zigbee Alliance. The Matter 1.4.2 release introduces Wi-Fi Only Commissioning, opening the door for Bluetooth LE (BLE) to be dropped on relevant smart home device categories while enabling existing Wi-Fi-only devices without BLE, Ethernet, or Thread to become Matter-enabled.
