The smaller version of the Apple Watch Series 7 uses a battery encased in metal instead of in a black foil pouch, as is typical for lithium-ion batteries. By using a metal casing, the battery can be sized to optimize the available space in the electronic device without the need for spacing between the battery housing and other components within the device. In the Apple Watch Series 7 (41 mm), the metal casing is connected to a common ground to allow other components to contact the battery housing without causing a short circuit. The application of metal may also increase the cyclic life of the battery and suppress the swelling issue in the battery.
