RF Industry Review Q1 2023: Contracts, New Products

Satellite-to-cellular satcomms emerged as a hot topic in Q1 2023 with many companies developing either 3GPP-compliant or proprietary radio chips, and numerous companies starting to place small communication satellites in orbit. Qualcomm and MediaTek both broadened their 5G chipset portfolios to cover phone and device tiers below flagship smartphones, widening the gap with Unisoc. The high-performance bulk acoustic wave filter maker Akoustis won its first order to supply filters for 5G. Four significant acquisitions involving RF components were announced, the largest with a price tag just below one billion dollars. Two interesting start-ups raised funding, one of them developing analog compute chips for artificial intelligence.
