Nintendo’s Switch 2 is set to revive the console market in 2025, delivering a major leap in handheld gaming performance with NVIDIA-powered AI graphics, ray tracing, and 4K output.
With over 125 million units shipped since 2017, the original Nintendo Switch established the hybrid gaming category. But as it enters its eighth year, performance demands and competition from handheld gaming PCs—like Valve’s Steam Deck and Asus’s ROG Ally—are reshaping the market. Nintendo’s response: the technically advanced Switch 2.
The Switch 2 is built around a new custom system-on-chip from NVIDIA, featuring RT (ray tracing) Cores and Tensor Cores. These hardware accelerators enable real-time ray tracing, HDR rendering, and DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling)—allowing the device to upscale to 4K in docked mode and support 1080p at up to 120 FPS in handheld mode. Nintendo claims a 10x graphics performance boost over the original Switch.
Backward compatibility ensures that existing Switch titles remain playable, while enhanced wireless bandwidth supports GameChat, a new feature enabling up to 12 players to voice chat and share screens across different games in real time. GameChat will be free through March 2026, after which it will require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription—part of Nintendo’s strategy to compete more directly with Microsoft and Sony's online ecosystems.
Priced at $449.99, the Switch 2 marks a 50% increase over its predecessor’s launch MSRP. Games will also be more expensive, with flagship titles like Mario Kart World retailing at $80. Still, early indicators point to strong consumer demand, driven by major architectural improvements and feature expansions.
By leveraging its long-standing partnership with NVIDIA, Nintendo is positioning the Switch 2 as the most advanced portable console on the market—narrowing the performance gap with x86-based handheld PCs while maintaining its unique hybrid gaming appeal.
