Smartphone shipments in the United States remained relatively flat year-over-year in Q1 2025, though they rebounded modestly from the previous quarter. Despite the uptick, this was the weakest Q1 performance for smartphone shipments in over a decade—even below levels seen during the pandemic. With the US remaining the most influential market for mobile technology trends, shifts in brand and model performance continue to carry global implications.
One key takeaway from the quarter: the market remains highly concentrated. The top 50 smartphone models accounted for more than 90% of all shipments, underscoring the dominance of a select few. At the front of the pack are Apple’s latest flagship devices. Three iPhone 16 models occupied the top three positions, collectively representing a significant portion of total shipments. Apple’s grip on the US market shows little sign of loosening.
Samsung held firm in the top 10 rankings, matching Apple in the number of models represented. However, its overall shipment volumes faced double-digit declines year-over-year. In contrast, Lenovo-Motorola saw continued growth, solidifying its third-place position among US smartphone vendors, ahead of rivals such as Google, TCL-Alcatel, and HMD (Nokia).
Google made notable progress in the premium and upper-mid tiers, with its Pixel 9 series carving out a meaningful presence. TCL-Alcatel and BLU, while still active in the entry segment, continue to lose ground to more aggressively positioned competitors.
Foldables remain a niche segment in the US, with limited consumer adoption beyond early adopters. While Samsung currently leads in this category, pricing remains a barrier to mass-market traction. The mid-range remains a key battleground, where Samsung, Lenovo-Motorola, and Google are all fighting for share.
